Club Championships 2024

The first round of the Club Championship were played over the weekend in welcomed conditions.  In the Ladies Championship Julie Lakotij holds a 4 shot lead over Jemma Leonard after shooting 86, while in the Gents A Grade Wes Hinton, the 2023 Gents Club Champion shot a 71 to sit 1 shot clear of Tony Robertson.   In the Gents B Grade, Greg Woodroffe is leading following his 83 and in C Grade, Ciaran McEvoy is in the lead after shooting 86.

The Club would like to remind all players (Championship & Day) of the importance of maintaining their pace of play.  The Club will also be running some food and beverage specials on the final round (Sunday - 17/3) to coincide with the Formal presentation of the Champions.

Again, the Club would like to thank Jeffrey McConaghy from Jeffrey McConaghy Jewellers for his support of the Club Championships, 2024 being the 10th year of Jeffrey's support of the Club.

Good luck to all those ahead of round 2.

Course NEWS

Weather Event

February proved a challenging month with significant periods of wet weather which collectively saw the Course closed for a week for some disjointed course renovations.  Unfortunately the weather did result in the need for some structural repairs, the biggest of which was the 11th bridge which sustained considerable damage.

8th Wall update

Although the repairs to the 8th hole continues to be a frustrating process, The Club is pleased to share that Queensland Reconstruction Authority who are providing the funding via Sport and Recreation have advised that a construction contractor has been appointed.  Pleasingly the Club has already had contact with this organisation and we remain hopeful that work will soon commence. The second part of these works include the full replacement of the 8th green that sits in the responsibility of the Club. Design plans (click below to view) are progressing well and we've attached some images of the likely solution.  Please note the most significant change will be the removal of the front bunker that overtime has proven to be a contributor to the damage of the Green.  It's important to remember that this area will continue to be subject to flooding and that the philosophy around design are based on resilience.

Irrigation repairs

More recently we've seen an increase in irrigation failures with the most significant being on the approach to the 20th bridge, left of the 9th green, 14th fairway and the exit of the 8th bridge.  Rectification of these issues is already underway.  In the coming months, the Course Team will be undertaking drainage improvements  on Fairway 22 and installing additional irrigation down the right side of the 24th Green.

9th Hole

Members may have noticed work being completed on the 9th hole, specifically the RHS of the fairway, 100m leading up to the green. This area presently has never has irrigation and historically has often presented poorly.  The works programme included the installation of an additional 250m of irrigation line and sprinklers.  The area has now been reinstated with new turf which has already improved the overall presentation of the hole.  These works were completed internally and provided training and development opportunity for our apprentice staff.

Insurance

Although this has been well communicated, mindful of recent industry events, we again remind members to review their personal insurance, due to the removal of the cover which existed within your membership.  We also encourage you to visit the Golf Australia website which provides details of the Player's Liability Insurance Policy which you hold as members.

Members are reminded of their responsibility in all instances that if you book to play on a timesheet and you have a need to cancel - you are accountable to remove your name (not your playing partners).  The Club has been monitoring this type of behaviour for some time and the frequency of this behaviour has got to a level of concern. Consequently, the Board has recently approved an update to the Match By-laws which now includes some punitive measures related to this behaviour - To view this, head to the Governance Page on the Member Homepage (Match By-laws).  Please be assured, this action have been motivated by the intention of ensuring members have the best opportunity to get a game of golf in all fields.

Ladies Corner

February started with  our annual Opening Day morning tea.  This year we had a guest speaker, Dr Ross Di Corleto, who provided an extremely informative and well received presentation on Managing Heat on the Golf Course.....and hasn't that been timely!  Virginia Irwin also described what Keperra's signing of the Women in Golf Charter means for the club and its members.

Our February weekday monthly medals were played on 13 February, when the course was particularly challenging, with a +3 difficulty factor.  Congratulations goes out to a new member Zoe Powell who won the A Grade Medal with 64 nett, B Grade Medal Jill Garvey 72 nett, and C Grade Medal Sue Truckey with 31 points. Well done ladies.

We are now well into the Captains 4BBB Stroke Matchplay event. Those progressing to the semi-finals are: *Kathy Madden & Julie Watson vs Lyn Howarth & Anne-Marie James *Jill Garvey & Pat Connor vs Ruth Turnbull & Zena Bell. Good luck ladies.
