19th November Course Update

19th November Course Update

We are trialling some new movable sand bins on the par 3’s; starting the trial on the front nine.  The aim is to improve the desired practice of filling divots with sand, particularly on the shorter par 3 holes.  Members, please fill your divots on all tees, particularly the holes with the new bins located beside the tee markers.

22nd Hole:  There has Been further progress this week with a significant amount of solid turf being laid.  The fairway has been cut a little lower and is starting to look more like the great hole it will become.  Having said this, more time is required to allow the fairway grass-cover to tighten up before the fairway becomes playable.  While it is frustrating to say the least, not rushing the opening of the hole will improve the long-term condition of this feature hole.

This week we have sprayed herbicide, so there will be noticeable browning of some foreign grasses throughout the course. All holes have received a fertiliser application and the repair to the ornamental fountain in the 21st dam has been completed.

Good golfing,

Keith Johnson

Course Superintendent

Vale – George Blazak

Vale – George Blazak

It is with much sadness that the Club has learnt of the passing of long term Member George Blazak, who sadly lost his battle with an aggressive brain tumour late last week.  George was to celebrate his 50th year with the Club next month.  The Club’s thoughts are with his family at this time.  George loved his golf at Keperra and will be sorely missed by the many friends/members who will recall his bright personality and zest of life.

George’s Funeral will be held at St Williams Church Grovely, Tuesday the 23rd at 10.30am

12th November Course Update

12th November Course Update

The green renovations (1-27) and fairway renovations (19-27) are starting to show signs of returning to normal play, particularly the greens which have benefitted from the fertilises and amendments added to the growing medium throughout the renovation process.  While the growth is encouraging it has led to putting surfaces that slow throughout the day as the grass plant thrives in the current conditions.  In the coming week we will dusting the greens and starting a program that will introduce a product to the putting surfaces that reduces the vertical growth of the grass plant.  This should help the consistency and speed of the greens.  The use of such products is not new at Keperra and many Clubs throughout South-East Queensland during the summer months. Weather permitting, we will also be rolling the greens on a weekly basis.

We have embarked on a program to reclaim some surface area to the putting greens.  Members will notice some scaring of the grass immediately around the greens, this scaring will be evident for a few weeks while we gradually lower these areas to putting green length.  In a similar process we are widening the fairway cut on a number of holes, which will improve the fairway definition and deliver some operational efficiencies by removing the intermediate fairway cut.

Good golfing,

Keith Johnson

Course Superintendent
