Gents Pennant Season – Final Round

Gents Pennant Season – Final Round

Round 6

Last Sunday our Men’s Division 1 Pennant Team headed to Redcliffe for a “do or die” clash. The winner would stay in Division 1 in 2024 and the loser would be relegated to Division 2 and have a long off season to wonder what went wrong. Keperra has a proud history having been in Division 1 for over a decade and longer than any other club. Coming off a strong win at home against Royal Qld the week before the team had renewed confidence and captain Daniel Butler rallied the troops for one last effort.

The team responded in fine fashion with a really strong performance beating the boys from the other side of the Hornibrook Highway 14 matches to 7. An away win is an excellent achievement but a win by that margin is a rare feat.

Our Open Team led the way with an 8 matches to 3 win which was their only win of the season but a very strong result when needed. Winners included Harry Takis, Jarrod Mann, Justin Morley, Ashley Grosvenor, David Nendick, Raymond Fenwick and Matthew Lake while Captain Butler and Gavin Chapman halved their matches.

Our Junior Team also enjoyed a strong win 4 matches to 1. Winners included Wes Hinton, Alfie Ward, Cooper Field and Jack Jones. This was the third win of the season for our juniors and capped a successful season in a strong competition.

Our Masters Team suffered their first defeat of the season going down 3 matches to 2 against Redcliffe. Matt Dowling and Tony Robertson won their matches to cap a very successful season for our over 50’s team. They secured the Masters’ Pennant successfully defending the flag they won in 2022.

The members can be very proud of their team who are excellent ambassadors for the club, they put a lot of effort into preparing for the season and each game and possess a team culture that is the envy of other clubs throughout Brisbane.

The team would like to thank all the caddies who gave up their time early on a Sunday morning to assist the players and the spectators who came to lend their support. Thanks once again to Jim’s Test and Tag also who supported the team.

It is a long off season but the team will be ready to start again in 2024 knowing that on their day they are as good as any team they come up against. Next year the Division 1 competition will consist of Brisbane who won the competition this year, Royal Qld and Indooroopilly who have been promoted after winning Division 2.

Round 5

After a 16/5 loss against a strong Brisbane side at Brisbane in round 4 it was crunch time for our Men’s Division 1 pennant team.

The equation was simple win the last two games against Royal Queensland at Keperra and Redcliffe at Redcliffe or face relegation to Division 2 for the first time in over a decade.

After 4 weeks of indifferent form to start the season the “real” Keperra Pennant Team came to play last Sunday. Playing against a strong Royal Qld team who would have won the pennant with a victory last Sunday our lads sent the RQ team back to Hamilton with a serious dent in their title aspirations. Keperra won the Masters 5 nil, Keperra won the Juniors 5 nil and halved the Open 5.5 each with RQ to record a 15.5/5.5 win on the day. It was a sweet victory after the RQ team inflicted a 14.5/6.5 defeat on the lads at Royal Qld earlier in the year and gives Keperra narrow bragging rights for the year.

Winners included Matt Dowling (6&5) Nathan Armstrong (2up), Luke Simpson (2&1), Tony Robertson (4&3), Craig Smith (4&3), Wes Hinton (6&5), Alfie Ward (2&1), Cooper Field (6&4), Jack Jones (2&1), Luke Brumpton (3&2), Ashley Grosvenor (2&1), Daniel Butler (2up), Gavin Chapman (5&4), David Nendick (6&5) and Harry Takis, Justin Morley and Matt Lake got half a point for the team by halving their matches.

A strong win and by far the best performance of the year will have the team full of confidence as they head to Redcliffe this weekend requiring a win to stay in Division 1 in 2024.

The team would like to thank all caddies and spectators who supported on Sunday as well as sponsor Jim’s Test and Tag for their support and welcome any members or visitors who would like to come along to Redcliffe on Sunday morning with the action starting at 7am.

Round 3

Last Sunday the third round of The Brisbane District Golf Association’s Pennant competition saw the Keperra team play against Redcliffe at Keperra. A beautiful day greeted the players but unfortunately it was the Redcliffe team that enjoyed the conditions a little too much and they ran out narrow winners on the day 11 matches to 10.

The Open team went down to Redcliffe 7 matches to 4 with Justin Morley, Ash Grosvenor, Matt Lake all recording victories while David Nendick and Raymond Fenwick halved their matches with the Redcliffe lads.

The Keperra Masters’ team remain undefeated for the season with a halved match on Sunday with Redcliffe. Wins to Tony Robertson and Craig Smith and a halved match by Nathan Armstrong at number 1 saw the “old boys” square their match 2.5 points each against Redcliffe. These older gentlemen remain on track to claim the Masters’ Pennant with some strong performances over the next few weeks.

Pleasingly our junior team recorded their first win of the season against Redcliffe. Wins to Wes Hinton, Jack Jones and Jingheng Tian on debut for the club and a halved match from Fahim Hilmi (who played beautifully the last two holes to win those holes and square his match) saw the “young fellas” record a 3.5 to 1.5 victory.

The final result for the day was a win to Redcliffe 11 matches to 10. Not the result the team was looking for but spirits are still high as the team head to Brisbane this week.

The team would like to thank all caddies and spectators who supported on Sunday as well as sponsor Jim’s Test and Tag for their support and welcome any members or visitors who would like to come watch some golf on the next three Sunday mornings.

Next game is this Sunday against Brisbane at Brisbane. First matches tee off at 7am with the Masters and Juniors hitting off the 10th tee and the Open team hitting off the 19th.

Round 2

Last Sunday the second round of The Brisbane District Golf Association’s Pennant competition saw the Keperra team play against Royal Queensland at Royal Queensland. Anyone that has played at RQ knows it is a long course with quick greens that can play quite difficult. Conditions on Sunday were cold and breezy and the RQ lads playing on familiar territory handled these better than the Keperra team.

The Open team went down to RQ 10 matches to 1 with Justin Morley being our only winner. While the result doesn’t look good on paper a number of matches went to the final hole and these were all won by RQ. As is often the case in pennant golf a shot here or there can make a big difference to the overall result.

The Masters’ team won their match against RQ 3.5 matches to 1.5. Matt Dowling and Luke Simpson won their matches again at number 1 and number 3 and Nathan Armstrong returned to the winner’s circle with a strong 5 and 3 victory at number 2 while Ed Salisbury squared his first match of the year. Keperra’s Junior team went down in their match 3 matches to 2. Jack Jones was victorious and Alfie Ward and Cooper Field (on debut for the club) halved their matches. The boys played really well and were very close to knocking over the RQ lads at their home course.

The final result for the day was a win to Royal Qld 14.5 matches to 6.5 matches. Not the result the team was looking for but there is significant home ground advantage at Royal Qld and the team is ready to bounce back this weekend against Redcliffe at Keperra.

The team would like to thank all caddies and spectators who gave up their time on Sunday as well as sponsor Jim’s Test and Tag for their support and welcome any members or visitors who would like to come watch some golf on the next four Sunday mornings.

Next game is this Sunday against Redcliffe at Keperra. First matches tee off at 7am with the Masters and Juniors hitting off the 10th tee and the Open team hitting off the 19th. Join the spectators behind the 18th or wander out to the 21st where you can watch some golf from a couple of directions.

Round 1

Last Sunday the first round of The Brisbane District Golf Association’s Pennant Season began when Keperra hosted The Brisbane Golf Club. In 2023, Keperra is playing in Division 1 as we have done for the last decade against Brisbane, Redcliffe and Royal Queensland.

As in previous years BDGA Pennant teams consist of 21 players – 5 Juniors (under 18), 5 Masters (over 50) and 11 Opens (any age). Players are ranked within their teams from 1 through 11 (Opens) and 1 through 5 (Juniors and Masters) and play matchplay against the same ranked player from the opposing club. The season consists of 6 matches with 3 home games and 3 away games.

The first up match was against Brisbane who won the pennant in 2022. Despite impressive wins by Club Champion Wes Hinton playing his first game at number one for the club and Fred Tilden down the other end of the order our Open team were only able to manage a 5.5 points and halved match against the Brisbane Opens. Other winners in the Open team included Jake Corben, pennant captain Daniel Butler, David Nendick while Matthew Lake’s match finished all square after 18 holes (there is no extra holes in BDGA Pennant).

The Masters’ team won their match against the Brisbane Masters 3 matches to 2. Recently turned 50 year old’s Matt Dowling and Luke Simpson who have been playing pennant for the club since the late 1980’s recorded impressive wins in their first Masters’ game as did Tony Robertson. While Keperra’s Junior went down in their match 3 matches to 2. Ben Dowling made it a Dowling double for the day while new member Alfie Ward showed great character and skill to win his match 1up playing number 1 against Qld Junior State player and newly crowned NSW Junior Champion Taj Egea.

The final result for the day was a squared match with both teams winning 10.5 points. While not the ideal start for the team there were still many positives to take from the day to build on for the upcoming matches.

The team would like to thank all caddies and spectators who gave up their time on Sunday as well as sponsor Jim’s Test and Tag for their support and welcome any members or visitors who would like to come watch some golf on the next five Sunday mornings.

Next game is this Sunday against Royal Queensland at RQ. First matches tee off at 7am.

Course News

Course News

As we move into the final month of winter, the course planning processes move to the spring renovations and preparing the course for Summer.  More immediately, we have commenced a spray program to address the emergence of winter grass in the putting surfaces, and extensive tree maintenance works continue to improve the play lines of holes, expose waterways, and improve airflow & sunlight to playing surfaces.

Greens

We are extremely pleased with the health of the greens and the way they have performed throughout winter.  The strong coverage that existed going into winter ensured that we would not need to oversow the surfaces.  It is always preferred not to oversow as it removes the need for an additional renovation & the playing convenience that come with this task.  Furthermore, it reduces the tasks and additional stress the plant incurs whilst spraying to remove the rye at the end of the season.

The green renovation process is anticipated to be similar to last year’s approach.  It will be a reasonably invasive renovation with 16mm cores being removed, deep scarification & a heavy top dress with sand and nutrient amendments (subject to final agronomist reports).  Throughout summer, we will again adopt a regular grooming and dusting process with the goal of strengthening the plant and the quality of the playing surface.  A modified approach is being considered for greens 7 & 17, which are challenging year-round.  Green 8 will not be renovated with the expectation that the works to build the new retaining wall and, ultimately, a new green will commence before the end of the year.

The preparation of the temporary green on hole 5, which will also be used when hole 8 is out-of-play, is progressing well.  Mindful of the poor condition of green 8, the temporary green may be used for social play sooner rather than later in an effort to reduce wear and tear.

Tees

Several tees need attention, and their poor condition is primarily attributable to the volume of play that the course continues to manage.   All tees will be renovated through aeration, top dressing, and adding nutrient amendments.   Although a more varied tee rotation process has aided the condition of the tees, larger and additional tee areas are desperately needed.  Identification and planning for tee improvements have commenced, and details will be soon shared.

Fairways

This year the fairway renovation will focus on the front nine and surrounds.  The fairways will receive scarification, aeration, and top dressing, with a plan to amend the top dress with gypsum to improve the growing medium.  The recovery from this process may take 4 or 6 weeks, but as evidenced this year, the process is well worth the short-term inconvenience.  The bottom of hole 19, the top section of fairway 22 & bottom of 23 will also be renovated.  Selected areas on holes 14 & 15 will also receive remediation.

General

Repairs to the electricity source of the 15th pump shed and the main line pipe will also occur over the next 8 weeks.  These works will not disturb play flows but are essential to ongoing course maintenance.

Quotes are also being obtained to repair the right side of hole nine near the green.  This area has long had poor turf coverage and is often very dry.  The improvements include new irrigation and fresh turf. These works should be completed before the end of the year.
