Congratulations to Steve Harvey for recently claiming one of the rarest of golfing achievements – an albatross.
After the 3 guys in the group teed off prior to myself and had all hit reasonable drives, I thankfully got one right out of the screws down the right side of the fairway. Initially I didn’t see the ball and thought it may have rolled into the rough. However the ball had travelled way further than originally thought, over the second rise about 40 metres ahead of the boys, leaving a short but blind shot into the green. Remarkably it was only a gap wedge to the pin.
Aiming to the uphill side of the pin, to keep it away from the right side, it felt really good off the club and I thought beauty, definitely will be close and chance for eagle. Dean (Nye) was standing on the hill and relayed “I think it went in”. Given the usual Aussie penchant to take the mickey I was somewhat disbelieving. However Jimmy who was also in the same position was somewhat more animated – “Albatross!!!!”. High fives all round and then a check of the hole to confirm – “bloody rippa!” Haven’t had a hole in one but have done one better. Couldn’t even cross it off the bucket list because I’d never even considered it
Well done Steve
